Winter Camping

email print PDF

January Klondike

Keys to a successful outing

  • Stay dry (change inner and/or outer layer when damp)

  • Dress in layers (with the correct type of materials NO COTTON!)

  • Food and water (Fuel for your body to keep warm)

  • Minimize skin exposure

  • Camp fire for cooking and drying clothes (Not for staying warm!!)

These are minimum suggestions. This will be car camping, to much is ok.

Inner Layer

2 Thin Polyester Long Under ware (upper with long sleeves)
1 to wear and 1 for change

The inner layer can be the same as warmth layer. Instead of having an inner layer then a warmth layer, you would have two warmth layers.

Warmth Layer

2 Thick Polyester/Polar Fleece/Wool sweater and pants
1 to wear and 1 for change

Inner Weather Layer

1 Wind breaker coat and pants (rain gear)

This will serve two purposes, keep wind/cold out and heat in.

Outer Weather Layer

1 Winter Coat
1 Snow Pants

Head, hands and feet

2 Winter hats (one to wear one to change/sleep)
1 Face mask or scarf (minimize skin exposure)
1 Thin inner glove (for rope tying)
1-2 Winter gloves
3 Thick Wool/Synthetic Socks (one/two to wear one for change)
1 Winter Boots - water proof

Boots and socks, too many socks can cut off circulation.

Sleeping

1 Winter sleeping bag -OR- 2 Summer Bags
2 Blankets 2 Blankets

Sleeping mat (tents will be placed on hay)
